This is where to find recommendations and reviews of military history books covering the Early Modern period from 1492 onwards.
Chase, Kenneth Firearms: A Global History to 1700 Cambridge University Press (7 July 2003) ISBN-10: 0521822742 ISBN-13: 978-0521822749
This book is a history of firearms across the world from the 1100s up to the 1700s, from their invention in China to the time when European firearms had become clearly superior. It asks why it was the Europeans who perfected firearms when it was the Chinese who had invented them, and answers this question by looking at how firearms were used throughout the world.
From a “Field Of Glory Digital” perspective it’s a useful way in to thinking about warfare in the Early Modern period in parts of the world like Central and inner Asia, India and Iran where we already have the unit graphics to create scenarios. Its Particularly good on showing how the important place that the horse archer held in the military cultures of these regions meant. that at lease to beg in with the gunpowder revolution had less to offer them than was the case in Europe.
Michael, Fredholm Eight Banners and Green Flag: The Army of the Manchu Empire and Qing China, 1600-1850 Pike & Shot Society (25 July 2009) ISBN-10: 1902768388 ISBN-13: 978-1902768380
A good single volume study of the Manchu Army particularly during its heyday in the 17th and 18th Centuries. In addition to sections on organization, dress and tactics the book also includes a large number of illustrations which make clear that this is very much an army that can be recreated in “Field Of Glory Digital” right now. Along with “Fighting Techniques of the Oriental World 1200-1860” I will be using to it do a series of scenarios on the wars of the Manchu’s in Burma and Central Asia.
