This is where to find recommendations and reviews of military history books covering the time period from the fall of the neo Babylonian Empire through to the establishment of a unified Imperial Ronan state under Augustus in 31 BC.
Ray, Fred Eugene Land Battles in 5th Century BC Greece: A History and Analysis of 173 Engagements McFarland & Co Inc (15 Mar 2008) ISBN-10: 0786435348 ISBN-13: 978-0786435340
This book provides a fully accessible analysis of warfare in 5th century Greece. Although enjoyable for anyone with interest in the drama of battle, the book is an absolute treasure trove for wargamers and others who are interested in recreating battles of the period particularly useful is the methodology he puts forward for working out unit titles.
At £45.50 its not cheep but if you want to reconstruct the hoplite battles of the 5th and 4th Centuries its an absolute must have. I made extensive use of it for my 1st Cyprian Salamis and Cunaxa scenarios.
Sabin, Philip A. G Lost Battles: Reconstructing the Great Clashes of the Ancient World Continuum International Publishing Group Ltd ISBN-10: 0826430155 ISBN-13: 978-0826430151
This book sets up a board game wargaming model as a tool for studying battles of the ancient world pretty much contiguous with the time period covered by the “Field of Glory Digital ““Rise Of Rome” & “Immortal Fire” modules. He provides scenarios for 37 Battles, starting with Marathon in 490 BC and ending with Pharsalus in 48 BC.
This is a book that uses conflict simulation as a means to the end of understanding how the battles worked. As such it is worth getting to grips with, not just as a tool for converting its scenarios into “Field Of Glory Digital” ones, but also as a methodology for thinking about scenario construction generally.
its worth noting that . Philip Sabin is also involved with the Society Of Ancients and has used the model set out in the book to construct additional wargames scenarios such as the battles of Kadesh and Megiddo in recent additions of their bimonthly journal “Slingshot. As a book its not to everybody’s taste but I have found it informative and thought provoking.
